RESUMO

The ß-delayed proton decay of ^{13}O has previously been studied, but the direct observation of ß-delayed 3αp decay has not been reported. Rare 3αp events from the decay of excited states in ^{13}N^{⋆} provide a sensitive probe of cluster configurations in ^{13}N. To measure the low-energy products following ß-delayed 3αp decay, the Texas Active Target (TexAT) time projection chamber was employed using the one-at-a-time ß-delayed charged-particle spectroscopy technique at the Cyclotron Institute, Texas A&M University. A total of 1.9×10^{5} ^{13}O implantations were made inside the TexAT time projection chamber. A total of 149 3αp events were observed, yielding a ß-delayed 3αp branching ratio of 0.078(6)%. Four previously unknown α-decaying excited states were observed in ^{13}N at 11.3, 12.4, 13.1, and 13.7 MeV decaying via the 3α+p channel.

RESUMO

The neutron inelastic scattering of carbon-12, populating the Hoyle state, is a reaction of interest for the triple-alpha process. The inverse process (neutron upscattering) can enhance the Hoyle state's decay rate to the bound states of 12C, effectively increasing the overall triple-alpha reaction rate. The cross section of this reaction is impossible to measure experimentally but has been determined here at astrophysically-relevant energies using detailed balance. Using a highly-collimated monoenergetic beam, here we measure neutrons incident on the Texas Active Target Time Projection Chamber (TexAT TPC) filled with CO2 gas, we measure the 3α-particles (arising from the decay of the Hoyle state following inelastic scattering) and a cross section is extracted. Here we show the neutron-upscattering enhancement is observed to be much smaller than previously expected. The importance of the neutron-upscattering enhancement may therefore not be significant aside from in very particular astrophysical sites (e.g. neutron star mergers).

RESUMO

The cross sections of nuclear reactions between the radioisotope ^{7}Be and deuterium, a possible mechanism of reducing the production of mass-7 nuclides in big-bang nucleosynthesis, were measured at center-of-mass energies between 0.2 and 1.5 MeV. The measured cross sections are dominated by the (d,α) reaction channel, towards which prior experiments were mostly insensitive. A new resonance at 0.36(5) MeV with a strength of ωγ=1.7(5) keV was observed inside the relevant Gamow window. Calculations of nucleosynthesis outcomes based on the experimental cross section show that the resonance reduces the predicted abundance of primordial ^{7}Li, but not sufficiently to solve the primordial lithium problem.

RESUMO

The 12C(α,γ)^16O reaction plays a fundamental role in astrophysics and needs to be known with accuracy better than 10%. Cascade γ transitions through the excited states of 16 O are contributing to the uncertainty. We constrained the contribution of the 0+ (6.05 MeV) and 3- (6.13 MeV) cascade transitions by measuring the asymptotic normalization coefficients for these states using the α-transfer reaction 6 Li(12C,d)^16O at sub-Coulomb energy. The contribution of the 0+ and 3- cascade transitions at 300 keV is found to be 1.96 ± 0.3 and 0.12 ± 0.04 keV b for destructive interference of the direct and resonance capture and 4.36 ± 0.45 and 1.44 ± 0.12 keV b for constructive interference, respectively. The combined contribution of the 0+ and 3- cascade transitions to the 12C(α,γ)16O reaction cross section at 300 keV does not exceed 4%. Significant uncertainties have been dramatically reduced.

RESUMO

The reaction 13C(alpha,n) is considered to be the main source of neutrons for the s process in asymptotic giant branch stars. At low energies, the cross section is dominated by the 1/2+ 6.356 MeV subthreshold resonance in (17)O whose contribution at stellar temperatures is uncertain by a factor of 10. In this work, we performed the most precise determination of the low-energy astrophysical S factor using the indirect asymptotic normalization (ANC) technique. The alpha-particle ANC for the subthreshold state has been measured using the sub-Coulomb alpha-transfer reaction ((6)Li,d). Using the determined ANC, we calculated S(0), which turns out to be an order of magnitude smaller than in the nuclear astrophysics compilation of reaction rates.

RESUMO

We have developed a new technique to study exotic neutron-rich nuclei via their isobaric analog states (IAS). We populate high-isospin states in resonant reactions of radioactive ion beams with protons. Characteristic gamma rays emitted from excited decay products were used to identify the population of the IAS. We show that information on the differential and total cross section for formation of the IAS can be extracted from the energy spectrum of the Doppler-shifted gamma rays. This technique was applied to the study of T=3/2 states in 7Li, which are analogs of states in 7He. The analog of the 7He ground state was clearly observed, whereas the presence of the analog of a narrow 1/2(-) state at 0.6 MeV excitation in 7He reported by M. Meister et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 102501 (2002)] was excluded at the 90% confidence level. Evidence is presented for a broad 1/2(-) state at a higher excitation energy in 7He.

RESUMO

Isobaric analog states of 7He have been investigated by a novel technique involving the observation of the resonant yield of neutrons from the 6He(p,n) reaction in coincidence with gamma rays from the decay of the (0(+),T=1) state in 6Li. The gamma rays provide a clean signature for the isospin-conserving neutron decay of the low-lying isobaric analog resonances. It is conclusively shown that the analog of the recently observed low-lying spin-orbit partner of the 7He ground state does not exist. Evidence is presented that this state lies at much higher energies, in agreement with microscopic calculations.
